I hope everyone is staying warm! I know one thing, I might actually miss the Texas heat. Everyone is doing well, we have a few new faces in the barn...and a few that I miss. We lost one of my best jr bucks, Nikolai. He had developed megacolon that I initially thought it was weaning problem but quickly was made apparent it was a chronic condition. He was really nice and a buck I had high hopes for. So that leaves me two Usher sons. Just two. And one of the two isn't looking good...ugh! So anyway, life goes on, he left be beautiful daughters that's for sure.
Here are a few baby pictures of the little ones in the barn currently. Only two have caught my eye...good thing because I just have two open holes. Definitely a problem as I a ton of litters due...okay, maybe not a ton, but 9! Yes, 9 does due in the month of February!

Alright, this guy has me intrigued. It's almost like a blast from the past here. He looks so much like XEO! Okay, so his ears look thin but I was holding him upside down a while and his ears were quite warm from my hand on them. I really think he'll be like his granddad, both of his parents are XEO son/daughter so I kinda have a clone of him now. So excited! He's not the most perfect little bunny but neither was XEO, he produced better than himself. Hope that's the case with this guy. He will turn 12 weeks on Saturday!

Last but not least, I must be honest here...I have fallen in love with the cals! I love how easy, no fuss, and hardy they are. I have no pans to clean, they have fresh air and breezes, no weird genetic stuff like peanuts, max factor, *megacolon* and have the nice bodies I love. Now if I had to be selective, I'd want a smaller meat breed that was easier to handle but this past week I sold $240 worth of buns as meat pens. They've pretty much paid for their feed for the rest of the year! I'm still getting meat pen requests too! So what does this mean? That possibly we may phase out of Dwarf Hotots in the next year or two at most. Selling the dwarf hotots alone would alot enough funds for a newer, bigger Californian barn...definitely something to think about.

Bigger breeds are definitely practical and in this day of people returning to homesteading, they are much more popular than they were just five years ago.
If you are interested in alternative meat breeds, feel free to send me a Facebook message - I'd be glad to share my ideas. :)
Noooo.
