Listrophorus gibbus-type of fur mite

Well, well, well, my favorite buck who has had brown specks throughout his fur finally got a diagnosis thanks to my daughter's birthday present. LOL She got her very own microscope that takes pictures and video. Very fancy! Of course momma wanted to borrow it to see what was going on and oh was it icky.

So what does he have? Its called Listrophorus gibbus, an uncommon type of fur mite. Rabbits are asymptomatic, it doesn't cause itching or fur loss, the only sign is tiny brown flecks on the fur shaft, they are so tiny. It looks like dust/dirt on the fur. Treatment is Ivermec x3 every 10 days and I am picking up some  diatemaceous earth to give him a bath in. None of my others have this so I am hesitant to give such a powerful med like Ivermectin as a 'preventative' so they will all get a DE bath instead.

Definitely what he has! Listrophorus gibbus

I'm so jealous of the microscope. I've wanted my own for a while.

Glad you were able to discover what your buck has and you can treat it! :)

Wow, interesting. Regina had this thing where she was pulling out the fur on her chest (before she had babies) and the skin was kind of red and spoty. A friend said she had a fur mite and to give her ivermectin, which I did. You said Ivermectin is a powerful med... just curious, because I give it (or at least, i try to) to my buns once every month as a wormer. (It is 1.87% ivermectin horse wormer) Just a pea sized drop. Do you worm yours/what do you use?
What do you think?

There are certain breeds that are sensitive to Ivermectin, Dutch being one. Since DH have some of the same genes as dutch, I've found that mine are sensitive to it. My buck Vinny had a really bad reaction to Ivomec, he nearly died from it. Stopped eating/drinking, became lethargic and cold. After a day of forcing fluids, I was able to flush the med out of his system and he was back to normal again. Very scary for me! So I don't like to use Ivomec at all unless absolutely necessary. You have the correct dose, I use the Ivermectin 1.87% pea sized oral dose as well. :-) Now I gotta go check on my buck...talking about reactions has me worried, I haven't checked back in the barn since I gave it this morning.

Oh, for wormer, SafeGuard is much safer to use, it can be given to preg. does/even weaned babies. Never had any problems with it, its like Panacur you give to puppies. So I worm with that.

Thanks for the reply! SafeGuard... I'll have to look into that. How often do you worm?
