Here's kinda how the presentation went...first I got Sophie out-she will pose and not move a muscle. I knew she'd be perfect at being still while I talked about rabbit breeds(mainly that there are tiny rabbits and BIG rabbits-lol I had to keep it pretty simple for 3 and 4 year olds to keep interested) and then we talked about what rabbits eat. I passed around a small baggie of feed pellets for them to feel it, the teacher would ask, is it hard or soft? LOL Everything I said was turned into a lesson or quiz from the teacher somehow. They couldn't believe that hay was actually dried grass too. One little girl said, "So the grass in my yard I can give your bunny to eat?"...which led to.."I have grass at my house, can Sophie come to my house??" Heehee. We then talked about how rabbits make nests for their babies and pull their fur out to keep them warm, I brought the nestbox and baby-the kids were just about pushing each other out of the way to get near me at this time. I took the baby out and walked around showing her to them. I deceided to not let anyone touch her because I wasn't sure if Zita would like all those weird smells on her kit, which led me to the lesson of how you aren't supposed to touch baby rabbits in the wild and if you find a nest of babies to leave them alone, ect. Last but not least I got Autumn out and sat down with her so that the kids could come up one row at a time to pet her-they LOVED this! Autumn was amazing too, she just sat there while at least 30 kids came up to pet her, she got extra oats when we got home.;-)
It was a success alright, I left the kids with some bunny coloring pages to color and take home too. I can't wait to do it all over again next year!
I wish I could have taken some photos but I would have had to get parent signatures to release them to put on my blog so here's the scanned thank you note from the class...
